Newton Faulkner @ Plymouth Pavilions

newton32Following a 4 star live review in the Evening Standard and his second album ‘REBUILT BY HUMANS’ reaching No.3, Newton Faulkner is heading to Plymouth Pavilions on Tuesday 9 March 2010.

‘REBUILT BY HUMANS’ is the follow-up to his debut album, the Number 1, million-selling ‘Hand Built By Robots’– which spent over 10 months inside the Top 40 Album Chart, and became one of the Top 20 Biggest Selling UK digital albums of all time, producing massive hit singles like ‘Dream Catch Me’, which spent an outstanding 43 Weeks in the Top 100.

There’s a good reason why the Brit-nominated acoustic-guitar virtuoso Newton Faulkner’s second album is called ‘REBUILT BY HUMANS’. At the start of this year, the singer-songwriter broke his wrist in France and dislocated his entire right hand. Faulkner nearly lost the movement in his hand and after a series of painful  procedures by French medics and a career saving operation at home in the UK, Newton was successfully rebuilt by humans and within days was back doing what he loves most, playing his guitar as taught by the legendary Eric Roche.

Newton says “I wanted to avoid the classic second album thing of complaining about how great things have gone and all the hard work.  I had brilliant fun making this album and hopefully it sounds that way. That’s another reason why If This Is It is great for the first single: hopefully it comes across as quite grateful. Because I am grateful”.

Thanks to the fans and to the doctors, Newton Faulkner is back on the live circuit and can’t be missed.

The Quails – New Album – Master of Imperfection

quails1Formed on a whim over a pint three years ago in a Teignmouth pub, the Quails earned their stripes gigging in pubs in the South West, building up a loyal army of fans who were rewarded at the end of last Summer when the band were chosen to open for Muse on the first night of their Resistance Tour and were featured as part of a BBC3 documentary about the gig. They also supported The Kooks at The Eden Project and Motorhead on the main stage at The Bulldog Bash. As yet unsigned, these gigs were all as a result of them being spotted in smaller venues.

The Quails have already been confirmed this Summer on the BBC Introducing stage at Reading.  They will be supporting Newton Faulkner at the Altitude Festival in Meribel in March. They’re headlining at Dartmouth Festival following Ruby Turner and will be supporting The Hoosiers and Seth Lakeman at Chagstock.  There are further exciting announcements to be made in the near future.

Last year the band also played at festivals in Turkey and Jersey and headlined a number of smaller music festivals; they played on the Britbus in Bristol and for the Jack Wills sponsored varsity polo party in Windsor.  A TV production company followed them to Turkey where they made a documentary about their invitation to play at an EU funded festival just 50 miles from the Iran/Iraq border.  The documentary is currently being entered for national film festivals.

The Quails are genuinely impressive live.  They are fronted by prolific and talented songwriter Dan Steer who has a distinctive and powerful voice and is a charismatic performer.   Rythmn and energy is supplied in buckets by Sam Banks on Bass and Chris Prentice on drums.  The music is on the rocky side of indie, and although there are countless nods to the greats such as The Beatles, Queen, Pink Ffloyd, Zeppelin and The Killers to name but a few, The Quails have very much developed a distinctive sound.  Dan’s voice is instantly recognizable, and Max Armstrong’s guitar riffs have to be heard to be believed.  Dan’s keyboard playing combines with good old rock guitar to create a perfect fusion of old and new.  Topped off with sublime harmonies, it’s no wonder this band are attracting so much attention!

The Quails have just left the wonderfully atmospheric Sawmills studios on the River Fowey in Cornwall after recording their second album.  Producer Simon Honywill who is the head of department for sound for The Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury said after the recording “I have just finished recording and producing their album, and it is absolute dynamite.  This band is the most exciting thing I have encountered in ages.”   The album, called “Master of Imperfection” will be released in May, with the first single Argentina coming out on the 3rd May.  There is also a campaign afoot to get another local, unsigned band into the charts.  Download Argentina in the week following the 3rd May.  The Quails will be doing a National tour to support the album launch starting at The Riviera International Centre on the 8th May.

“The Quails are the perfect package.  The quirky five piece storm the stage with their classic – rock-edged indie/pop tunes and cool shoes.  Visually well-styled they are a record company’s dream and could easily be cut out and pasted onto a major festival stage”.  Go To Magazine “The first time I saw this Indie rocking five-piece live, they blew all the other bands clean off the stage; tight, professional and oozing with energy, The Quails are the real deal”, The Fly Magazine www.myspace.com/thequailsband We’ve chosen a live track taken straight from the desk at The Muse gig and a quieter studio track that builds!

South West band The Quails is fronted Dan Steer, a prolific and talented songwriter as well as a charismatic front man with a powerful, distinctive voice.  Sam Banks on bass and Chris Prentice on drums drive the sound providing the band with an energy

Ragged Fish “Into the Fray”

raggedThis month’s new featured release is Ragged Fish “Into the Fray”.  Over the last few days I haven’t really listened to anything else – almost finding this music pleasantly addictive. With very strong Latin vibes; this aromatic album has a track for every mood, which in its self is a big plus.

There are a lot of different textures here, mainly uplifting. This is more prominent in the infusion of different styles, like Samba and Salsa.

Songs like “Into The Fray” have this kind of journey feel to it and a complete contrast in mood back to “Mamagansa”

There are many styles of music here, the Latin for grove, the Salsa for feel – all infused around gentle Jazz fills and compelling melodies.

The whole feel is positive and the level of musicianship is outstanding, the melodies are warm and I reckon anyone who is into this kind of music will find it very compelling. Moorish to a point of waiting impatiently for the next offering.

Great music to dance to yet equally as powerful on one’s own. The production is to a very high standard. Mixed by Mark Emery @ Orchard Studios, Blagdon with attentive first class production.

Formed in 2007 Ragged Fish comprise of Rik Thorn, Guitar, founder member and Composer, Dhevdhas Nair on Piano and percussion, Jeff Walker Upright and Electric bass, Coach York on Drums.

The band will be performing at Torre Abbey on April Friday 19.00-21.00

The album will be available for general release in the next few weeks. For more information please visit http://www.myspace.com/raggedfish

Toby Anstis (Heart FM Presenter)

toby1“Hi there, I’m Toby Anstis and you can catch me every weekday morning from 10am to 1pm on Heart. My job is to play you the best variety of music and keep you entertained throughout the morning and beyond!”

Toby is one of the best-loved and most popular TV and radio presenters. He made his name on television presenting BBC1’s The Ozone, Electric Circus and Live and Kicking. Since then he’s presented and appeared on a variety of shows including the National Lottery Live and Britain’s Next Top Model, he co-hosted Children in Need and even braved the jungle in I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!. But his heart remains firmly in radio.

“I just love it! I’ve been dreaming of doing this job since I was 9 years old and every day just gets better. On my show, I play a fantastic mix of songs to keep you singing along to all day. There really is something for everyone from Take That, Abba and George Michael through to Alicia Keys anheartd Lady GaGa. On top of that, I keep you up-to-date with the very latest showbiz news, plus you’ve got the chance to win dream prizes and holidays.”

“I love hearing from all our listeners across Devon. I get loads of texts and emails each day from people wanting to say hi to their family or friends or telling their workmates to stop stealing the chocolate biscuits from the cupboard! Last week, I had a funny email from Sandra in Exeter who invited me round to her place for lunch after my show – she said she made a wicked cheese omelette! Unfortunately I had a meeting after my show that day, so Sandra, it’ll have to be another time!”

“In my spare time, I love to keep fit. I’ve got a personal trainer called Tom, who’s an ex-Army guy, so there’s no slacking with him! We do lots of circuit training and kick-boxing. I also really enjoy skiing. My sister and brother-in-law live in Chamonix, so any free time I’ve got, I head over to see them in France. I’ve got a gorgeous nephew called Rocco who will be celebrating his first birthday soon. I love spending time with him and dragging him round Chamonix on my sledge!”

But after time on the slopes, Toby is always itching to get back behind the mic. “I love working at Heart, we all have a lot of fun! I also love the reaction I get from people, telling me how much they enjoy the songs and banter. If I can give people a lift during their day, whatever they’re doing, then I know I’ve done my job!”
