• Branscombe Airfield Charity Rugby 7s – 16th & 17th July 2011
• Boney M Concert – 16th July 2011
An exceptional weekend of sport and music will take place at Branscombe Airfield this summer. During the last 20 years an annual Charity Airday and Classic Car Show has raised over £125,000 for charity. When 4 years ago the airfield changed hands the new owners David and Naomi Hayman were determined to continue raising money for charities across Devon. So this year there are 2 major charity events being held at the Airfield.
On the weekend of the 16 / 17 July the inaugural Devon Rugby 7s will take place in aid of the Rugby Charity the “Wooden Spoon”. Bruce Priday of the Wooden Spoon is “really looking forward to a fantastic weekend of rugby with 32 teams from around the country competing for over £2,000 in prizes”.
The event has the full backing of the RFU and world cup winner Jason Leonard OBE will kick off proceedings. “I was delighted to give my support for this fantastic event and I hope that David and Naomi raise a considerable amount of money for the Wooden Spoon.”
An added attraction for players and spectators alike is an open-air concert at the Airfield on the Saturday night when Marcia Barrett of the 70s band Boney M will be flying in from Berlin to perform. Boney M had 12 hits in the 70s and sold over 50 million records worldwide Marcia is really looking forward to the event “I have played in major venues throughout the world but playing at a village airfield is a first for me. We have a great line up with The Kixx a really exciting new band, they are raising stars in England, and they are currently touring with Olly Murs the runner up in the latest X Factor. We also have a great disco band The Funking Barstewards.”
Tickets are now on sale at ticket master and other major agencies.
The Sunday of the following weekend sees the return of the Branscombe Charity Airday & Classic Car Show, in aid of the BBC Radio Devon Air Ambulance Appeal and the Exeter Leukaemia Fund. Thousands are expected at the fun-filled family event, which will feature a fly in of over 100 aircraft with an air display of nearly 2 hours including a Tiger Moth, Hurricane and Hunter jet. There will also be 300 classic cars, live music and dozens of stalls. Owner of the Airfield Naomi Hayman hopes that this year will be even more successful than previous years “we were overwhelmed with the success last year and were able to give nearly £10,000 to local charities. Our two main charities this year are such worthy causes and we hope that the weather will be kind too us so that we can raise even more money on 24 July. Bill Price a Trustee of Devon Air Ambulance Trust also hopes for a busy day “It is fantastic that David and Naomi are supporting the BBC Radio Devon Appeal as we need to raise further £600,000 in order to buy a new £4million Air Ambulance”
